In the Kingdom of Arendelle, the King and Queen have two daughters: the elder named Elsa, and the younger, named Anna. Of the two, Elsa is special, as she was born with a power to create snow and ice.

One evening while playing secretly as children, Elsa’s powers discharge, and she ends up hitting Anna with an ice blast, knocking her unconscious. and turning several strands of her hair white. Upon their parents discovering this, they quickly rush to a group of trolls within the kingdom’s mountainous territory.

The troll’s leader named Pabbie, after examining Anna, claims that she can be saved. However, he advises the family that it might be best to not have Elsa use her powers around Anna, and manipulates Anna’s memories so she has no knowledge of her sister’s powers, but remembers the fun times, albeit slightly altered. Pabbie also explains that Elsa’s powers will grow, and can prove a danger if she cannot learn to control them.

The girl’s parents then separate the two, and having no knowledge of what has occurred, Anna is unable to comprehend why her sister is not allowed to play with her. As a further precaution, the two are also kept from leaving the castle.

While Anna’s life is rather normal, Elsa has to contend with her powers growing stronger as she matures. Her father cautions her to wear gloves to keep her powers in check, as well as conceal her feelings, which seem to cause her powers to manifest.

Unfortunately, the girls’ lives are turned upside-down, when their parents are lost at sea. Of the two, Anna is the only one to attend the funeral, and goes to Elsa’s door, pleading for console from her only other family member, but Elsa (sadly) refuses to communicate to Anna.

3 years after the death of their parents, Elsa has come of age, and the castle is in preparations to crown her as the Kingdom’s Queen. Elsa is nervous about opening the doors to the castle and receiving the many guests to the kingdom, while Anna is eager to get out of the castle.

When Elsa gives the order to open the castle doors, Anna eagerly rushes out into the city, and encounters a handsome prince named Hans.

Later on that evening, a dance is held after Elsa’s coronation. The sisters then share their first words face-to-face in many years. At first things appear to be going well, and then Elsa is asked by the Duke of Weselton to dance. Elsa declines, and has Anna go in her place.

After the dance, Anna encounters Hans, and the two go off to talk. Hans tells of how he is the youngest of 13 brothers, but as the two talk further, they both find that they seem to have so much in common. This revelation soon leads to Hans proposing to Anna, and her eagerly agreeing.

Returning to the ballroom, they both ask Elsa to approve of the marriage, but Elsa grows emotional, and claims she will not grant this blessing on her sister. Elsa then requests that the guests leave, setting Anna off on a tirade at her sister, who now not only seems distant emotionally, but also seems intent on keeping her from happiness.

Unable to contain her emotions, Elsa makes a violent sweep with her arm, causing a barrier of sharp icicles to appear. Shocked at the room’s reaction to her powers, Elsa rushes from the room, and across the waters of the kingdom, her feet causing ice to form, allowing her to flee into the far mountains.

Anna calls after her sister, but as she, Hans, and the other guests watch, the waters of the fjords completely ice over, and the air takes on an icy chill.

The Duke of Weselton, feeling that Elsa is an evil sorceress due to the ice and snow forming, wants to hunt her down, but Anna proposes a solution: she will find her sister, and get her to stop the snow and ice. Leaving Hans in charge of the kingdom, she takes off on horseback, as the snow intensifies.

Meanwhile, Elsa has found her way to a high precipice on the Kingdom’s North Mountain. It is here she realizes that far away from what she was taught, being on her own, she can control her powers! She then constructs an elaborate ice palace, changes her confining wardrobe into a shimmering dress, and vows to stay in seclusion, where she feels she can be herself, and harm noone else.

Meanwhile, Anna’s attempts to make it through the snow are hindered, when her horse is spooked, and rushes off. Noticing some smoke nearby, she finds a small trading post, run by a man named Oaken. Luckily, the trading post has winter gear that fits her. As she is about to leave, a mountain man named Kristoff appears, wanting to buy supplies. When the topic turns to the weather, Kristoff claims it seems to be strongest near The North Mountain. However, upon the winter weather causing the prices to go up on the supplies he needs by some 400%, Kristoff and Oaken have an altercation, before Kristoff is thrown out into the snow.

Kristoff and his reindeer Sven take refuge in a barn on Oaken’s property, but are soon met by Anna, who has bought Kristoff’s supplies for him, on condition he takes her up the North Mountain immediately.

Kristoff eventually agrees, and the two head off into the night. As the discussion turns to Anna and her sister, Anna explains about her whirlwind engagement, which causes Kristoff to even question her decision. However, the sled is soon surrounded by wolves, and the group escapes by leaping a chasm, but ends up losing the sled. Kristoff is at first upset that his sled is gone, but is willing to help Anna keep going, worried for her safety. Even so, Anna promises she will replace the sled.

After some time in their wanderings, the two encounter a frosted glen, and a talking snowman named Olaf. However, Anna recognizes Olaf’s design as being similar to one Elsa made when they were young. Anna and Kristoff tell how they want to find Elsa to bring back summer, and Olaf suddenly grows excited, claiming it’s his dream to see what summer is like. The two do not reveal what summer will mean for him, but follow him as he leads them to Elsa’s ice palace.

Meanwhile, Hans has continued to try and provide shelter and help for the Kingdom’s people, when Anna’s horse returns, riderless. Hans quickly asks for volunteers to go off and bring back Anna. The Duke of Weselton also volunteers his two bodyguards, and secretly tells them to take care of Elsa if they should encounter her.

Arriving at the Ice Palace, Anna enters and the two share a conversation, with Anna claiming her sister’s powers are no reason why they should be so distant. However, Elsa flashes back to their childhood, and grows scared, demanding Anna leave.

Elsa retreats to the upper portion of the palace, and Anna follows her, explaining about the “eternal winter” plaguing the kingdom. This causes Elsa to grow even more terrified, and Anna continues to plead with her sister that they can solve this problem together, but Elsa grows so upset at what she has caused, that she unleashes an icy chill, of which a portion strikes Anna in her heart.

Realizing she has hurt her sister again, and wants her gone, she creates an enormous ice creature, that chases Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf out of the castle. After their escape, Kristoff suddenly notices that Anna’s hair has started to turn white. Fearful that she may be injured, Kristoff takes her to his family…who happen to be a group of rock trolls (the same ones that saved Anna many years before). Kristoff claims that as he had no family at a young age, the trolls took him and Sven in.

At first, the trolls are overjoyed to meet Anna, and eagerly believe that she is Kristoff’s girlfriend. However, he tells them that she is injured and needs their assistance. Just as in years before, Pabbie comes forward, and examines Anna, but concludes that being struck by her sister’s powers, has caused her heart to begin to freeze. As he cannot save her, Pabbie tells them that “an act of true love, can melt a frozen heart.” Anna quickly tells Kristoff that Hans can surely help, and they take off back for Arrendelle.

Meanwhile, Hans and his party have reached Elsa’s palace. At first menaced by her snowman bodyguard, The Duke’s bodyguards charge into the palace, and corner Elsa. Attempting to kill her with a crossbow, she begs them to leave her alone, but as they continue to attack her, she threatens to kill them, before Hans intervenes. However, one of the bodyguards sends an icy chandelier crashing down, knocking her out.

Elsa then awakens back in Arrendelle, manacled in a prison cell. As she looks out over the frozen kingdom, Hans appears, telling Elsa that Anna has not returned, and pleads with her to stop the winter. Elsa claims she can’t, and must be let go to keep others from being harmed.

Meanwhile, Kristoff and Sven arrive at the castle. Anna’s condition has grown worse, a chill coursing through her, and more of her hair has turned white. Several of the castle staff escort her in, as Kristoff and Sven leave. Eventually, Anna is brought to Hans, and tells him that he has to kiss her in order to save her.

The castle staff in the room quickly leave to give them privacy, and Hans places Anna in a chair…but then reveals that he doesn’t really love her. As Anna shockingly looks at him, Hans explains how being the youngest of 13 brothers, he feels he would have no chance at claiming his family’s throne, and so went looking for a Kingdom he could marry into. Elsa would have been suitable, but no one seemed able to win her over. However, upon finding out about Anna’s naivete, he played her along, intending to marry her, before causing some form of “accident” with her and Elsa, thereby taking the throne.

However, with Anna’s current condition, he plans to simply have her frozen heart overcome her, then kill Elsa, ending the eternal winter. Anna tries to stop Hans, but he extinguishes the fire in the nearby fireplace, before locking her in the room. It is then that Anna collapses, her hair now completely white.

Meanwhile, Hans goes to speak with the Duke of Weselton, and several other dignitaries. He claims that Anna has froze to death, and it is the fault of her sister, who shall be charged with treason for her murder.

The palace guards then go to Elsa’s cell, but are detained when the walls of the cell collapse, and it is shown that Elsa has escaped into the cold.

Meanwhile, far from Arrendelle, Kristoff and Sven are trekking away, when Sven urges Kristoff to go back. Kristoff claims he has no need to, but upon looking at Arrendelle, a mysterious swirling cloud of snow begins to engulf the Kingdom. The two then take off in hot pursuit towards the growing danger.

Meanwhile, Olaf has managed to find Anna in the locked room, and seeing her freezing, quickly lights a fire in the nearby fireplace. Anna then explains to Olaf that Hans wasn’t her true love, and that Olaf should leave or he’ll melt. However, the little snowman claims he will not leave her side until he finds an act of true love that can save her. As they talk, Olaf recalls how Kristoff did so much to try and get her back to save her, when suddenly, a nearby window blows open from the wind outside. Olaf quickly goes to close it, but sees in the distance, Olaf and Sven charging towards them.

This gives Anna hope, in that maybe Kristoff can save her. Olaf then attempts to help her up, but as they make it into the nearby hallway, ice begins to dangerously form, blocking their paths. Going out a nearby window, the two slide down, as Anna attempts to make her way across the icy fjord, with Olaf close behind. However, as the wind picks up, Olaf is blown away, and Anna finds her hands beginning to turn to ice! Even so, she continues to move forward, calling out Kristoff’s name.

Meanwhile, Hans has found Elsa wandering the ice of the fjord. Thinking he’s come for her, Elsa tells him to leave her alone, and take care of Anna, only for Hans to lie, and say that Anna was killed by Elsa’s magic. The pain of this causes Elsa to collapse, the snow in the air suddenly hanging in stillness.

The sudden stopping of the whiteout, causes Kristoff to see Anna, and he quickly runs to her, but as Anna looks around, she sees Hans about to stab Elsa. Even with her own life at stake, Anna rushes in front of Hans, blocking the knife. As she does so, her frozen heart finally consumes her, turning her into a statue of ice, and shattering Hans’ blade.

This causes Elsa to turn around, and upon seeing her sister turned to ice, she breaks down in tears, hugging her sister, saddened that she has lost Anna. Noone is sure what to say, when suddenly, Anna’s icy form begins to dissipate, and she returns to normal! Apparently, Anna broke her own spell, with saving her sister (an act of true love).

It is then that Elsa realizes what can end the winter: love. And with this realization, she dissipates the ice and snow, and summer returns to the kingdom. Olaf is also found, and Elsa forms a small “flurry” above his head, which keeps him able to survive the warmth of the summer heat.

In the aftermath, Hans is taken back to his kingdom by another of the royal guests, who claim they will see he is punished for his crimes against the royal family of Arrendelle. Meanwhile, the Duke of Weselton is still as hotheaded as ever, and given his attitude, it is decreed that trade between Arrendelle and Weselton shall be severed.

Meanwhile, Anna has made good on her promise, and replaced Kristoff’s sled, as well as made him the castle’s official ice deliverer. Kristoff is so grateful that he kisses her.

Having also come to grips that her powers are a blessing and not a curse, Elsa uses them to create a wintry spectacle in the summer sky, and turns the main grounds of the castle into an ice rink, where she informs Anna that the gates to the castle will never be closed again. With the village’s people in attendance, the sisters then begin to skate around the ice rink, happy in the fact that they are finally back together again.

The following is based on a true story. The film opens at the German Grand Prix in Nurburgring in 1976. Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) looks to the sky and narrates that he and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) have long been considered rivals, though he doesn’t know why people think that. As the race commences, the two of them, along with the other racers, speed off around the track.

We see James Hunt going into a hospital with his uniform looking dirty and his nose is bloodied. When he introduces himself, everybody is stunned. He’s is treated by a cute nurse named Gemma (Natalie Dormer). She tends to a wound on his abdomen done by another man using a crowbar. He tells Gemma that they had a disagreement over the man’s wife. She asks what he did, and he says only what she asked him to, which he offers to show Gemma. Cut to the two of them having sex at home…more than once.

James takes Gemma to the Crystal Palace circuit to meet his crew for a Formula Three race. He starts puking, which concerns Gemma, but she’s assured that he does this before every race. That’s when James sees Niki Lauda coming around for the first time. The two enter the race, with Niki nearly winning until he spins out and his motor heats up, giving James the victory. Niki confronts James afterwards, calling him an asshole, but he gets laughed off by James and his mates.

We learn from Niki that he comes from a family of politicians and economists. He asks his father for a loan to allow him to enter a Formula One racing team, but he refuses. Niki takes out a loan from the bank himself and uses it to buy his way in. He has his own car made as fast as he deems it should be, and has racer Clay Regazzoni (Pierfrancesco Favino) drive his car across the racetrack, proving it to be faster than the team’s previous car. Niki convinces manager Louis Stanley (David Calder) to let him enter with his own car under the conditions that he has a spot on the team and he gets a two-year contract even though he’s just a rookie. Later, Regazzoni bumps into Niki, saying he noticed he was talking to the pretty track manager. He informs her that her last boyfriend was also a racer, who was crazy and “an immortal fucker”. It was James.

James’s team, Hesketh Racing, gives him a new car to race with, which he loves. He takes it to the racetrack at Watkins Glen as they drive for Formula One now. An accident takes place there, putting James’s nerves on edge and causing him to throw up later.

While in the Hesketh garage, he visualizes himself racing when he meets a model named Suzy Miller (Olivia Wilde). Within a short amount of time, the two are married. After the wedding, James is told that Niki is set to drive for Ferrari.

Niki is seen driving one of Ferrari’s car, saying it’s a piece of crap. He later officially signs on for the team. Afterwards, Regazzoni drives with Niki to a party, but Niki stays outside. He spots a beautiful woman leaving the place. Her name is Marlene Knaus (Alexandra Maria Lara). He asks for a ride and she allows him to join her. On the road, he critiques the car and her driving, up until the car breaks down in the middle of the road. Marlene manages to get two Italian men to stop, and they get excited when they see Niki. Marlene doesn’t realize who Niki is, but she convinces him to drive fast for her. He does so, speeding through the road and thrilling her and the other two men.

The 1975 Formula One racing season takes place, with Niki winning the world championship. Later at a party, James speaks to Niki, who thinks all of James’s flash and showboating doesn’t mean anything. This gives James more of an incentive to prepare for the following year’s championship to beat Niki.

James goes to the Hesketh Racing garage to find that it is closed because they missed the deadline to secure sponsors. James drowns his sorrows in booze and cigarettes, then gets angry and lashes out at Suzy. He later meets with the managers of the McLaren tracing team, in which he is able to secure a position.

The 1976 season begins. Niki wins in Brazil and South Africa with James placing second. James comes in first in Spain but is disqualified because the back of his car is deemed too wide. Niki secures more victories in Monaco and Belgium. To make matters worse, James learns that Suzy is having an affair with actor Richard Burton. After meeting with her one last time at a bar, they settle on a divorce. When he steps outside to greet the press, he makes a joke of the divorce as his easiest win. Later, James’s disqualification is removed and his car is adjusted to fit the standards.

Niki and Marlene get married in a private ceremony and spend their honeymoon in Spain. That evening, after some fun in the pool, Niki tells Marlene that now that he’s found happiness, it has become an enemy of his, because he now feels he has something to lose.

During practice for the German Grand Prix, an accident takes place and a racer’s leg is terribly broken. Niki holds a meeting with the other racers and racing officials, saying that because of the rainy weather, it would be too risky to race, and so it should be canceled. James then leads the others to think that Niki’s doing this so he can maintain his racing points, while another racer suggests that Niki is frightened. Niki admits that he is frightened, as the rain increases his risk of dying out there, but he knows everybody else is just as scared. Although some racers join the vote to cancel the race, the majority rules that the race continue as planned.

The race goes on, with both James and Niki using rain tires, which they are forced to change at the pit stop because the track dries up quickly. During the third lap, a suspension arm in Niki’s car breaks, causing him to swerve off the track and crash into a wall, resulting in the car becoming engulfed in flames. Two other cars hit him, and some racers run to pull Niki out as he catches fire. He is taken to the hospital where six doctors and 34 nurses tend to him, and it is reported that his condition is worse than it was previously believed. Marlene hears of this news over the radio.

Over six weeks, Niki recovers in the hospital, albeit with third-degree burns to his face and toxic fumes in his lungs. His lungs are vacuumed out, and the top half of his head is disfigured. All throughout his stay, he watches James continue racing and earning more points. When he is able to get back on his feet, Niki tries to put his helmet back on, but the burns on his face make it painful. Marlene tells him to stop, but he tells her that if she loves him, she’ll let him do this.

Niki makes his return to the racetrack. He is met by James, who says he tried to write him a letter while he was in the hospital and that he feels responsible for what happened to him. Niki responds that James is equally responsible for getting him back behind the wheel after watching him racing on TV.

During a press conference, Niki answers questions regarding his recovery and plans to continue racing. One reporter asks how his wife reacted when she saw his face. Niki replies that she told him he doesn’t need a face to drive, but rather, the right foot. The reporter asks again if he thinks his marriage will suffer because of his disfigurement, to which Niki says “Fuck you.” After the press conference, James confronts the reporter and punches him repeatedly in the face for the question, then telling him, “Go home to your wife and ask her how you look. Prick.”

The final race comes at the Japanese Grand Prix, where it is raining harder than in Germany. Before the race starts, James and Niki acknowledge each other and give a friendly wave and nod to one another. As the race goes on, Niki takes the lead over James, but he begins to think of Marlene. He forfeits the race to avoid risking his life again, and he rejoins his wife. James continues the race under the intense conditions, and he is forced to make a late pit stop when the rubber on his tires starts wearing out. As he finishes the final lap, the scoreboard reads that he placed fifth, which would mean he missed out on the championship. However, it is reported that he finished third, allowing him to win. While he celebrates his victory, Niki and Marlene leave in a helicopter. She asks him if he’s alright, and he says yes, because he has no regrets.

Following his win, James continues about his playboy lifestyle and endorses several products. While in Bologna, Italy, he goes to an airfield to find Niki, who has taken up flying planes. Niki implies that he would have won if he continued the race, and it was unacceptable for James to take all those risks. Before James leaves, Niki tells him that he had gotten something big in finding an enemy. James smiles and goes back with his friends.

The film ends with brief footage of the real James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

Niki narrates again saying that James retired two years later. When he died of a heart attack at the age of 45, Niki felt sad, as James was one of the few people he respected, and, to this day, the only person he envied.
